Carpenter AntThe black carpenter ant is the most common carpenter ant species in the Northeast. Workers are black and vary in size from about ¼ to ½ of an inch long. The presence of larger workers indicates a long-standing colony. Workers have an evenly rounded thorax and one node between the thorax nd abdomen. This very small ant is about 1/16 of an inch log and is shiny jet black. Little black ants create very large colonies with many queens. Reproductives emerge between July and August. When they invade structures they may nest in woodwork or the masonry of buildings or against foundations. Normally this ant feeds on plant secretions and on aphid honeydew. It will also feed on sweets,meat, bread,grease,vegetables,and fruits.
